Preventing HIV

The best way to deal with HIV is to make sure you don’t get it. Make prevention and staying negative your priority.

  • Know your status, get tested every six months or sooner if you have been exposed to the virus.
  • Talk to your partner about their status and sexual history.
  • Use a condom during anal sex (or vaginal sex.)
  • Condoms are still the best way to protect yourself from the virus during intercourse.
  • If you use needles for anything, make sure they are new or properly disinfected.

Get Tested

It is recommended that anyone who is sexually active, uses IV drugs, or has had other exposure to HIV get tested every six months. The presence of other STD’s significantly increases one’s risk for receiving or transmitting HIV.
